Thekua Recipe – Crispy Sweet for Chhath Puja

A traditional Bihari sweet in Chhath Puja- Thekua. This sweet is meagerly eaten in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh region. This is especially prepared during Chhath Puja. It is a golden, crunchy cookies made with whole wheat flour, jaggery, and ghee, and are deep fried to perfection. With hint of cardamom and dry coconut, Thekua isn't only a prasad-it’s a nostalgic chunk of historical past.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup jaggery
  • 4–5 tbsp ghee
  • 1/4 cup grated dry coconut
  • 1/2 tsp elaichi powder
  • Water
  • Oil- used for deep frying

Instructions:

  1. Mix jaggery and small quantity of warm water in a bowl to make sweet water.
  2. In sweet water, add wheat flour, elaichi powder, grated coconut, and ghee.
  3. Make a dough and keep it aside for 10–15 minutes.
  4. Shape into small circular or in traditional style.
  5. In a pan heat the oil in a medium flame till it turns golden brown.
  6. Store it in a container to make it cool.
