Panchamrit, literally means "five nectar", is a sacred prasad that is offered during Janmashtami and other auspicious puja. This sacred, nutritious mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey and sugar is a symbol of purity and devotion, and is distributed into devotees as a blessing.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your Vessel
    • Use a clean silver or bronze bowl to honor the tradition and increase the purity of prasad.
  2. Level and mix
    • In the following order, add sugar, honey and yogurt. Gently whisk to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Rich with ghee
    • Add in ghee until fully incorporated and the mixture becomes silky.
  4. Finish with milk
    • Run in milk, then whisk until you have a simple, homogeneous nectar.
  5. Do the decoration and serve
    • Alternatively, top with fresh basil (holy basil) leaves or a few strands of saffron. Serve immediately as offering.

Tips and Variety:

  • As additional , fold in a spoonful of soaked makhana or chopped almonds.
  • Replace sugar with jaggery for earthy taste and added minerals.
  • Use raw, cow's milk and fresh churned yogurt to honor the tradition.
  • Double or triple corresponding to a large gathering, keeping the same component ratio.
