Spicy Thecha Chicken is a bold and delicious dish that brings green, spicy gravy with green chili, aromatic garlic and chicken. Originally in the rustic culinary traditions of Maharashtra, this is influenced by the extreme warmth of the curry - traditional dry sauce, accredited for its separate smoky and nutty taste.
What makes Thecha special?
There is a simple yet effective blend of roasted green chili, garlic, peanuts and fresh coriander, which is immersed in coarse paste. Ingredients
For Thecha Paste:
- 10–15 green chillies (regulate based on spice tolerance)
- 4–6 garlic cloves
- 1/4 cup peanuts
- 1/2 cup clean coriander leaves
- Salt, to flavor
For Chicken Curry:
- 1 kg chicken
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 cloves
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 tablespoons curd/yogurt
- 1/2 cup water
- Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare Thecha Paste
- Dry roast peanuts, green chillies and garlic in a pan for 3-4 mins .
- Transfer to a mortar and pestle or blender, including coriander, and salt.
- Crush into a coarse paste without including water. Keep aside.
Step 2: Cooking the Chicken Curry
- Take a pan and heat some oil in it. Add cumin seeds, cloves, and bay leaf. Let them sizzle.
- Add finely chopped onions and sauté till golden brown. Stir in ginger-garlic paste and turmeric powder.
- Toss in the chicken pieces, searing them .
- Mix in the Thecha paste, coating the chicken with the fiery blend. Let it cook for 10–12 minutes.
- Lower the heat and add overwhelmed curd/yogurt to create a rich texture.
- Pour in water and let the curry simmer till chicken is soft.
- Garnish with clean coriander and serve hot with Bhakri or steamed rice.
